Get to Know the Faculty: Molly Simpson

Professor of Theatre at A-State, Molly Simpson, has been involved in professional regional theatre, numerous regional, national and international television commercials, directed numerous stage productions, including children's theatre and musical theatre. Let's get to know her.

Place of birth?
Born in Jonesboro, but raised in Meridian, Mississippi and Cheshire, Connecticut.
Why did you choose A-State?
My parents attended A-State, where they met. We were living in Connecticut when I graduated high school and I had spent the summer singing and playing my guitar on Cape Cod and I wanted to continue my independence, so I came to Arkansas. I am so fortunate to get to teach at my Alma Mater.
What music is playing in your car?
Alabama Shakes and The Black Keys
What is your favorite podcast?
This American Life and All Songs Considered.
What makes a good professor?
They must be passionate about their subject.
Who was your favorite teacher (and why)?
My first grade teacher, Miss Burkes. I fell in love with school because of her.
What makes for a good student?
Focus, discipline and exuberance.
What’s the value of a university education?
It helps you to understand that there are numerous ways to look at the same thing and that everyone has a right to their opinions, beliefs, lifestyles and interests. It’s where you can be exposed to things you never knew existed.
Your philosophy on education in seven words:
Working, playing, creating, reading, exploring, building and growing.
My hobby is...
Reading, traveling, cooking and exercise.
My passion is...
my family. Nothing is more important to me.
If you could teach another field, which one and why?
Probably something in nutrition or physical fitness. These topics have become increasingly interesting and personal to me. Without a healthy body, it’s difficult to continue enjoying life. My husband and I are both avid runners.

What is the one thing you wish you could teach everyone about your field?
I would want them to know the number of skills that it takes to become a well-rounded theatre artist.
What are you working on right now?
I’m preparing a new class for the fall: Advanced Creative Improvisation.

have the opportunity to perform with our students in a faculty directed production.

A perfect day is...
having my husband, children and grandchildren all together. We recently spent several days together in California for my stepdaughter’s wedding. It was perfection.
Cats or dogs?
Cats, no contest!
E-book or hardback?
I enjoy both but will always have a love for the real thing. When we built our home we included a library for me.
Beach or mountains?
Both. Beach for the atmosphere but mountains because I love to hike. We have hiked the Grand Canyon twice and climbed to the summit of Mount Elbert in Colorado, the highest summit in Colorado.
