The Learning Commons represents the latest in design and function for student learning and academic support. The open layout, contemporary, movable furniture, and bright, inviting interior encourages students to study individually or in groups, receive tutoring, or work on a paper with a writing consultant.
With its central location in the library, the Learning Commons provides students quick access to supplemental learning through peers, technology, and other library resources. Services and programs housed in the Learning Commons include learning support, Transition Studies, Writing Center, Communication Center, and Trio Programs.
Learning Commons Services
Walk-in an appointment-based tutoring for individuals and small groups is available for general education and other 1000 and 2000 level courses. See the Learning Commons front desk staff for assistance, call 870.972.3451, or view our schedule online.
Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Lab
The STEM Lab assists the university community with STEM-specific tutoring. Whether you need assistance with an assignment, or an upcoming test, the STEM lab provides guidance and supplemental instruction for greater student comprehension. College algebra tutoring is available during all operating hours.
The Writing Center assists the university community with all types of writing assignments. Whether it’s an assignment for your composition class or a research paper for your history class, the writing center consultants will provide guidance and feedback. Follow the link above to learn all about the services provided by the Writing Center.
The Communication Center is a non-judgmental space for students to practice and prepare oral presentations for any assignment, project, or speaking opportunity. Our trained student coaches are able to assist clients in developing, organizing, and delivering speeches -- from preparation to presentation. Our center is equipped with audio and visual recording capabilities so clients can review their work and coaching session after the appointment. Additionally, we can help with things like: citing sources, organizing thoughts, creating effective visual aids, and overcoming speech anxiety.
Some sections of classes that are considered “high risk” offer peer or graduate assistant led learning groups. The leader facilitates discussion and understanding of material and how to best prepare and study for the class including improving specific study skills for that course. If you are a faculty member looking for a Learning Group Leader, please contact Kelli Listenbee, Learning Commons Coordinator at 870.972.2080 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Academic Success Coaches
Professional and graduate assistant academic success coaches can help you create a study plan for a particular course, assist you with study skills or develop a time management plan that works for you. They can also help you identify specific resources in the Learning Commons that can best help you.
Structured Learning Assistance
Structured Learning Assistance is much like Learning Groups except that the SLA session is built into the schedule for the class and students must attend. This offers students a powerful safety net for difficult courses.
Study Group Space
The Learning Commons was designed for formal and informal study groups and student learning. Its location in the library allows students to have immediate access to computer labs, reference material and library and learning assistance staff. Much of the furniture is mobile allowing for students to quickly form small groups to study or work on a project together.
The Learning Commons supports successful student independent learning.
The Learning Commons provides the most comprehensive tutoring services at Arkansas State. However, other programs across campus offer assistance to special populations or in subjects not offered by our department.
