Interlibrary Loan

The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Department, located just past the Circulation Desk, is a free service that works to acquire requested material from other libraries for short term loans.

Frequently Asked Questions about ILL

What can be requested?

All varieties of library material can be requested, including books, abstracts, dissertations, videos, CDs, microfilms, and periodicals. All loans are subject to availability and the terms set by the lending institution. However, items such as abstracts, dissertations, and videos are rarely circulated via interlibrary loans.

We will not process requests for textbooks that are currently being used in classes on campus.

How do I place a request?

From Library Website or the Online Catalog

To request material, fill out the online request form as best you can. The staff at the Information Services Desk can assist in locating information on your request that you are unable to find. Be sure to include as much information about your requested material as possible.

From a FirstSearch Database

From the Library Databases page, choose one of the FirstSearch databases (look under vendor to determine which databases are offered by FirstSearch). Search for your requested material using the search tools. Once you have found the item you want, click on it and a split page will appear with several icons at the middle of the page and on the left side. Click on the ILL icon and fill out and submit the form that appears.

The information will be transferred to a review file where we can determine if AState owns it or not and order it for you. If AState owns it, the program should tell you before it sends it to the review file. You may check the online catalog from there also and determine if we do or do not own the item. If there is any problem with your request, you will be notified by email. Be sure to include an email address when filling out the form. We will notify you by email when the item/s arrive.

When and where do I pick up my requested material?

Requested materials can be picked up at the Circulation Desk after it arrives. The average request for a book is about 5-10 days. Articles usually take 3-5 days. If an article is sent electronically it will be sent to your AState email account.

Can I renew items on ILL?

If a renewal is needed contact the Interlibrary Loan office and we will request it from the lender. Online renewals are not valid

Where do I return items?

ILL materials should be returned to the circulation desk. Please do not put in the drop box.
